Seoul, South Korea, set list heavy on new material, but Gaga’s biggest hits come out to play.

<P><a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/lady_gaga/artist.jhtml">Lady Gaga</a> kicked off her hotly awaited <i>Born This Way</i> Ball at Seoul, South Korea's Olympic Stadium on Friday (April 27) in front of 45,000 fans, and despite <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-17867102" target="_blank">protests</a> from Christian groups saying Mother Monster was "obscene" and could "taint" young people with her performance, the concert appears to have gone on without incident.</P><P>Intrepid Twitter fans are already showing off pictures and video of the <i>BTW</i> Ball's enormous Gothic castle backdrop and myriad costume changes, making it clear that Gaga has outdone even her own Monster Ball in terms of spectacle.</P><P>While we wait for reviews to trickle in from halfway around the world, one thing is certain: No minors were corrupted at the show. Earlier this month, the Korea Media Rating Board decided to <a href="http://newsroom.mtv.com/2012/04/02/lady-gaga-unfazed-by-south-korean-concert-age-restrictions/">elevate the age rating</a> for the concert from 12 to 18, prohibiting minors from seeing the concert. When the board notified Gaga's tour promotion company and a sponsor of the change in age restrictions, it did not offer a reason why the show &#8212; which at the time was still in rehearsals and had not been reviewed publicly &#8212; was considered unsuitable for children under 18.</P><P><CENTER><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:717952/cp~vid%3D717952%26uri%3Dmgid%3Auma%3Avideo%3Amtv.com%3A717952" width="430" height="242" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="."></embed></CENTER></P><P>The likely catalyst for the board's decision came more into focus as the concert neared and protests from a group of conservative Christians calling itself the Alliance for Sound Culture in Sexuality ramped up. The group <a href="http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-31749_162-57419977-10391698/lady-gagas-born-this-way-ball-met-by-protests-in-south-korea/" target="_blank">covered Seoul with posters</a> accusing Gaga of "spreading unhealthy sexual culture" through "lewd lyrics and performances."</P><P>The superstar and her fans, however, were undeterred. Though she <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/ladygaga/status/186886867118080000" target="_blank">tweeted</a> her hopes that the Korea Media Rating Board would reverse its decision (it didn't), she continued on as planned. Many fans reportedly arrived at the show wearing versions of Gaga's most well-known flamboyant costumes, and there have been no reports of disturbances at the concert.</P><P>Before the show, Gaga <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/ladygaga/status/195815732494348288" target="_blank">tweeted</a>, "I can you hear you Korea. <P>On Thursday (January 7), the U.K.'s Royal Mail unveiled a series of 10 new stamps, honoring the most iconic album covers of the past 40 years.</P><P>The albums featured in the new series are the <a href="/music/artist/rolling_stones/artist.jhtml">Rolling Stones</a>' <i>Let It Bleed,</i> <a href="/music/artist/led_zeppelin/artist.jhtml">Led Zeppelin</a>'s <i>IV,</i> <a href="/music/artist/bowie_david/artist.jhtml">David Bowie</a>'s <i>The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars,</i> <a href="/music/artist/mike_oldfield/artist.jhtml">Mike Oldfield</a>'s <i>Tubular Bells,</i> <a href="/music/artist/clash/artist.jhtml">The Clash</a>'s <i>London Calling,</i> <a href="/music/artist/new_order/artist.jhtml">New Order</a>'s <i>Power, Corruption and Lies,</i> <a href="/music/artist/primal_scream/artist.jhtml">Primal Scream</a>'s <i>Screamadelica,</i> <a href="/music/artist/pink_floyd/artist.jhtml">Pink Floyd</a>'s <i>The Division Bell,</i> <a href="/music/artist/blur/artist.jhtml">Blur</a>'s <i>Parklife</i> and &#8212; the most recent album on to make the cut &#8212; <a href="/music/artist/coldplay/artist.jhtml">Coldplay</a>'s <i>A Rush of Blood to the Head.</i></P><P>Meant to honor "the most potent graphic images of modern times, many of which have provided a visual soundtrack to people's lives," the series is the end result of a lengthy research process by the Royal Mail, who looked through thousands of album covers by British artists before deciding on the final list. And, during a Wednesday night BBC Radio broadcast, it was revealed that the queen herself actually approved each design.</P><P>Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page &#8212; who helped design the cover for <i>IV</i> &#8212; was on hand to celebrate the release of the stamps and recalled the mysterious nature of the album's iconic imagery.</P><P>"Almost 40 years after the album came out, nobody knows the old man who featured on the cover, nor the artist who painted him," he said. "That sort of sums up what we wanted to achieve with the album cover, which has remained both anonymous and enigmatic at the same time."</P><P>Of course, any great honor is befitting of an equally great contest, so, on the same day the stamps were made available to the general public, Coldplay decided to give one of their <i>Rush of Blood</i> stamps away. In a message on their official site, the band held a contest to send one lucky fan "a letter using a Coldplay stamp, postmarked with today's issue date."</P><P>"We visited our local post office earlier today and bought some of the Coldplay stamps," the message read. "Very nice they are too."</p>

R&B superstar serenades a lively crowd with tracks from his upcoming album Looking 4 Myself.

<P><a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/usher/artist.jhtml">Usher</a> kicked off the "Today" show's summer concert series Friday morning (May 18) in front of a lively crowd. Fans filled midtown Manhattan's Rockefeller Plaza to watch the ATL singer serenade them with singles off of his upcoming album <i>Looking 4 Myself.</i></P><P>Even though Usher performed bright and early, there was no shortage of energy as the singer rocked the crowd with his new hits "OMG," "Without U" and new hits "Climax" and "Scream." The audience stayed on their feet as Usher soulfully connected to fans (especially when he removed his jacket).</P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="Usher Gets The Party Moving On 'Today' With 'Without U'" id="vid:770400" width="415" height="255"></div><p></P><P>On Wednesday's <link type="content" id="1685266">"MTV First: Usher," the R&B superstar debuted his new track "Twisted" featuring Pharrell and opened up to host Sway Calloway about how <i>Looking 4 Myself</i> is "all about evolution." "All of my career is kind of an unveiling, an unfolding story, and it ain't done. There's so much more that I'm going to do, so much that I've now just been interested in and been introduced to," he said. "I just want that experience of having this very monogamous relationship with entertainment and acting in a way where I can really, really focus and become better."</P><P>Other acts that will follow Usher on the "Today" summer concert series include Justin Bieber, Maroon 5, Pitbull, Chris Brown and the soon-to-be-picked <link type="content" id="1486475">"American Idol"</link> winner and runner-up.</P><P>The concerts will occur every Friday morning for the remainder of the summer. Murray will represent himself as he contests involuntary manslaughter conviction for which he faces up to four years in state prison.

<P>As expected, <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/jackson_michael/artist.jhtml">Michael Jackson</a>'s former doctor <a href="/news/articles/1673957/conrad-murray-appeal-verdict-michael-jackson.jhtml">Conrad Murray has filed an appeal</a> to challenge his involuntary manslaughter conviction.</P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="Michael Jackson's Former Doctor Guilty Of Involuntary Manslaughter" id="vid:708788.id:1673923" width="240" height="211"></div><p></P><P>According to <a href="http://www.tmz.com/2011/12/02/conrad-murray-files-appeal-involuntary-manslaughter" target="_blank">TMZ</a>, Murray filed the petition in pro per, which means he has decided to forego hiring legal representation and represent himself. He reportedly listed "Men's Central Jail" and his booking number in the space on the appeal document where a lawyer would normally list a firm's name or contact information.</P><P>TMZ also reported that although Murray seems to be without a lawyer, he is still in communication with Nareg Gourjian, one of the attorneys who represented him during his manslaughter trial.</P><P>"This case presents a gold mine of issues for any appellate lawyer," Gourjian told TMZ. "Dr. Murray is confident that the Court of Appeal will vindicate him."</P><P>Following the guilty verdict, Murray's lead defense lawyer Ed Chernoff told CNN, "What matters most right now is trying to keep Dr. Murray from taking up a prison cell in this community. That's what we're focusing on right now, and we'll deal with an appeal after that."</P><P><a href="/news/articles/1675062/conrad-murray-sentence.jhtml">Murray was sentenced to four years</a> in jail Tuesday, but due to overcrowding, he's unlikely to serve his full term. </p>

In a close-up shot of his profile, Usher sports a neck tattoo that matches the artsy images in the background.</P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="Usher 'Needed A Boss' For 'Lemme See'" id="vid:764890" width="415" height="255"></div><p></P><P>On it, he's got collaborations with Rick Ross on <a href="/news/articles/1684255/usher-rick-ross-lemme-see.jhtml">"Lemme See,"</a> Pharrell on "Twisted," and <a href="/news/articles/1619238/how-did-luke-steele-end-up-on-jay-z-album.jhtml">Luke Steele</a> on the album's title track, according to <a href="http://hiphop-n-more.com/2012/05/usher-looking-4-myself-album-cover-track-list/#more-83093" target="_blank">Hiphop-n-More</a>. Bieber’s mentor and dance-off foe will debut his new track ‘Twisted’ on ‘MTV First: Usher,’ airing tonight at 7:54 p.m. on MTV.

<P><a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/bieber_justin/artist.jhtml">Justin Bieber</a> and his mentor, <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/usher/artist.jhtml">Usher</a>, believe it or not, have engaged in a dance-off or two. While Bieber is certainly known for his ability to cut a rug, he noted that his pal has the smoother of the dance moves.</P><P>"Dance-offs? We had one the other night. He did this little show in New York," Bieber explained to MTV News earlier this month about facing off against Usher during his stint in the off-Broadway <a href="/news/articles/1685172/usher-fuerza-bruta-rehearsal.jhtml">"Fuerza Bruta" in April</a>. "Mid-show, he comes in the middle of the dance floor and does a dance battle with me. And I'm like 'I'm too tired for this.' He pulls out moves and I can't <i>not</i> dance battle Usher.</P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="Usher Continues To Mentor Justin Bieber" id="vid:765694.id:1684329" width="415" height="255"></div><p></P><P>"So I go in there, do my whole thing," he recalled. "He's just given me the advice of 'Always keep the people that were there in the beginning, keep them with you because those are the people that really care. They want to see you succeed,' " he said. King of Pop’s takeover leads to some head-scratching song choices.

<P>"Glee" paid tribute to Michael Jackson during Tuesday night's episode and, shockingly, kept the story moving along in the midst of several MJ-inspired musical numbers. Kurt, Rachel and Quinn all received great news about college, Rachel finally accepted Finn's proposal and evil Sebastian's plot to harm Kurt with a doctored slushee backfired when Blaine took the hit for his boyfriend.</P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="'Glee'-Cap: Michael Jackson Takes Over McKinley High" id="vid:730282.id:1671179" width="240" height="211"></div><p></P><P>Yet the forced "all Michael, all the time" song selection led to some head-scratching scenes including Kurt, Rachel and Finn serenading an injured Blaine with Jackson's love song to a rat, "Ben," and two different music-video re-enactments only appealed to Jackson superfans. <P>You kind of can't go wrong when the soundtrack you've put together for one of the most eagerly anticipated literary adaptations in years kicks off <a href="/music/artist/yeah_yeah_yeahs/artist.jhtml">Yeah Yeah Yeahs</a> singer Karen O's take on <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/led_zeppelin/artist.jhtml">Led Zeppelin</a>'s "Immigrant Song."</P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" id="vid:693384" width="240" height="211"></div><p></P><P>Fans heard the throbbing industrial take on the rock classic cooked up by former Nine Inch Nails mastermind and O when a trailer for the David Fincher-directed "Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" leaked back in May. And on Thursday, Oscar-winning industrial-rocker-turned-film composer Reznor and musical partner Atticus Ross unveiled the full track list for their "Tattoo" score album.</P><P>The follow-up to their award-winning "The Social Network" score was a labor of love, according to a <a href="http://nin.com/?id=102677" target="_blank">post</a> Reznor put up on the NIN site on Thursday announcing the disc. "For the last fourteen months Atticus and I have been hard at work on David Fincher's 'The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo,' " he wrote about the American version of the tale of pierced and punished hacker <a href="/news/articles/1655879/rooney-mara-dragon-tattoo.jhtml">Lisbeth Salander (Rooney Mara)</a> and her muckraking journalist compatriot <a href="/news/articles/1667542/daniel-craig-rooney-mara-girl-with-the-dragon-tattoo.jhtml">Mikael Blomkvist (Daniel Craig)</a>. "We laughed, we cried, we lost our minds and in the process made some of the most beautiful and disturbing music of our careers. The result is a sprawling three-hour opus."</P><P>The album will be released on iTunes on December 9 in two versions. Right now, you can download the Karen O song on iTunes when you pre-order the 39-track album. Above the Buzz examines how these former pop princesses serve as examples of how stars can re-brand themselves again and again.

<P>Both <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/spears_britney/artist.jhtml">Britney Spears</a> and <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/simpson_jessica/artist.jhtml">Jessica Simpson</a> dominated headlines this week. Not since the late '90s have these two duked it out for so much media coverage.</P><P>However there's a remarkable difference in what's happening today to what was happening then: Then, everyone was talking about their music and their pop star personas. Where Britney was a Lolita who proclaimed virginity while dancing provocatively in belly-baring tops, Jessica was innocent and sweet and didn't dare anger her minister daddy. Jessica released songs that put her big voice on display, and Brit focused on songs that put eyes on her dazzling dance moves and her ear for dance beats.</P><P>A lot has changes in the years since then. What's interesting is that, despite their seemingly different personalities, in retrospect, they have a lot more in common than was initially apparent: They are both down-home country girls who have built empires that few can touch. Both have had very public career highs met with very public personal lows. Both have loved <a href="/news/articles/1683993/boy-band-allegiances.jhtml">boy banders.</a> Both have even documented their lives on reality shows, albeit with very different outcomes.</P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="'We All Are Authentic'" id="vid:493178.id:1633959" width="415" height="255"></div><p></P><P>With almost 15 years separating the women they are now from those girls they were then, it seems they are looking to change it up.</P><P>At a time where the pop world is filled with plenty of younger pop princesses looking for their time to shine, Britney and Jessica seem comfortable enough with their own musical legacies to let them all have their moments. And, they should be at ease. They have both been incredibly successful in that world, having sold millions of albums, had huge radio singles and made music that is uniquely their own. And while Simpson has let her music take a back seat to other projects in the past few years, Spears is still a working singer who sells out tours and tops the charts.</P><P>These days, Jessica seems focused on maintaining the post-pop star second act she launched several years back. She's a fashion mogul with a billion-dollar empire that has outfitted fashionistas with reasonably priced essentials like platforms and bags. She also judges up-and-coming fashion talent on NBC's "Fashion Star," sharing with new designers her own wisdom on breaking into the industry. But, always savvy enough to keep people guessing, she's expanded her brand even further.</P><P>Now, she is also the latest <a href="/news/articles/1684326/jessica-simpson-baby-beyonce.jhtml">mommy mogul</a>. Jessica just added another gig to her post-pop star career &#8212; that of the A-list mom. Just this week, she welcomed her first child, <a href="/news/articles/1684216/jessica-simpson-baby-girl-maxwell-drew-johnson.jhtml">Maxwell Drew</a>, into the world. We expect she'll use that experience to re-launch herself yet again. We should expect fashion lines for stylish toddlers. And who wouldn't want to see a reality show that follows the new mom and her family?</P><P>It seems that, like Simpson, Spears might be looking to take a break from music for a moment. Having already given birth to two sons and tried her hand at the worlds of fashion and beauty, Spears is now a frontrunner to <a href="/news/articles/1684320/x-factor-judges-miley-cyrus-britney-spears.jhtml">judge "X Factor."</a> Her own experiences in the industry certainly make her the perfect candidate to give advice on the ups and downs of pop superstardom. She's experienced both with the entire world watching. While Spears' other projects (clothing line, fragrances) have generally been overshadowed by her music career, this rumored gig might be the first one to take the attention away from her pop fame while using it for all it's worth.</P><P>Spears is probably up for the gig because she is basically the heir to the <a href="/news/articles/1681693/madonna-above-the-buzz-pop-queen.jhtml">Madonna legacy</a>. She truly understands how to be a pop star. And the rumors that she might join Simon Cowell on the show seem to be intriguing Spears' critics and non-devotees more than anything she's done in the past few years. Spears might have found her perfect next chapter.</P><P>Right now, it's unclear how these new career paths will shape the future for Simpson and Spears &#8212; musically and otherwise. But, as has always been the case for them, no one doubts they will redefine what it means to be a female pop star. They are women who aren't willing to go quietly into the night. <P><b>UNIVERSAL CITY, California</b> &#8212; Hard rock, heavy metal, hardcore and punk have long gone hand-in-hand with evil wizards, magic, vampires and werewolves. And with a collective sub-cultural pedigree that includes stints in the Germs, No Use for a Name, Sunny Day Real Estate, Scream and some band called Nirvana, you'd think the <a href="/music/artist/foo_fighters/artist.jhtml">Foo Fighters</a> &#8212; set to perform at Sunday's <a href="http://www.mtv.com/ontv/movieawards/2011/">Movie Awards</a> &#8212; would know their "Potter" from their Zeppelin. Certainly they can recognize a "wand" reference and pinpoint its origin?</P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="The Foo Fighters Take The Movie Awards Quiz" id="vid:660301.id:1664959" width="240" height="211"></div><p></P><P>Right? Before we put MTV News' magically crafted trivia to the band, it seemed safe to assume the Foos would accurately distinguish between the words of Harry Potter, a "Twilight" character and Led Zeppelin. But was their underground nerd cred blown to shreds? There may be a break for the family of April Kauffman. New Jersey radio host, and businesswoman extraordinaire, she was found shot to death in her bedroom last week. Kauffman’s claim to fame was her job as a radio personality in the New Jersey area. She was also well known as a strong advocate for military veterans. Her voice could be heard hosting a show on WOND up until earlier this year. Police believe the murder occurred sometime over night on Thursday. A friend of her’s named Donna Clementoni says she sent the slain DJ an email around 2AM the night before she was found dead. Her friend called her a “local legend,” and says they were planning an event to benefit war veterans together at the time of her death. The most amazing thing I was able to find on her is that she would spend her Thanksgiving providing a loving meal to nearly 50 recruits from the Cape May U.S. Coast Guard Training Center. I’ve been watching a lot of HGTV since coming to LA. My favorite shows are House Hunters and House Hunters International. There’s also another show I like to watch called For Rent, but only because it makes me angry.

When it comes to apartments/homes, I think living in New York for the past eleven years has made me bitter because there was this whiny broad on For Rent a few nights ago who was looking at a huge place—A HUGE PLACE—and was like, “There’s no place for a dining room table…”

B*TCH, YOU’RE LUCKY TO GET A KITCHEN IN NEW YORK.

I hated her.

Now there’s some stupid lady on House Hunters who wants a townhouse with a fireplace that she can turn on with a light switch. IT HAS TO BE A LIGHT SWITCH because she doesn’t want to bend down and flip a switch on the floor.

WHO DO THESE PEOPLE THINK THEY ARE?

Anyway, I know my LA update is WAY overdue (and truth be told I wrote a long one last week but for some reason it didn’t save so I lost the whole thing and I was so angry that I just said, “Ah, f*ck it,” and closed the computer instead of rewriting) but to give you a quick update, I AM SO HAPPY HERE. I MEAN, I’M REALLY, REALLY HAPPY. And I think living here and watching HGTV—both of these things combined—has made me realize that New York was just beating me down. I mean, the fireplace lady—yes, she’s an idiot. But there’s nothing wrong with wanting a dining room table. Why did I get so mad at that lady?

Since being here, at least once a day I ask myself why I have lived in New York for so long. (It’s like I had Stockholm Syndrome or something.) CALIFORNIA IS AWESOME. It’s like the promised land. It’s sunny all the time and there are birds and flowers everywhere. I have space out here. I have a sofa on the patio out here. I HAVE A SOFA OUTSIDE. I haven’t seen one rat since I’ve been here. But hummingbirds? THEY ZIP BY MY HEAD EVERY DAY. I am so happy.

I’m supposed to go back to New York in November, but truth be told, I’m not sure I will.

<P>It seems that <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/wanted_boy_band_/artist.jhtml">The Wanted</a> are on <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/spears_britney/artist.jhtml">Britney Spears</a>' "Most Wanted" list.</P><P>Just one day after the boy band made headlines for a claim they made about touring with the pop star, her rep has released a statement shutting down their allegations.</P><P><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:762692/cp~vid%3D762692%26uri%3Dmgid%3Auma%3Avideo%3Amtv.com%3A762692" width="460" height="260" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="."></embed></P><P>It all started Monday with a New York radio station interview. <a href="/news/articles/1684195/the-wanted-britney-spears.jhtml">The Wanted's Siva Kaneswaran dished</a> about hitting the road with Spears back in November 2011, claiming, "I was in the hallway with my tour manager. Basically, we were looking with a laptop, trying to get WiFi … facing the middle of the hallway. [Britney's] bouncers came down with her and told us to face the wall … We turned around and I faced a wall for about 10 seconds until she got really far away."</P><P>Spears' camp, it seems, isn't taking their allegations lightly. In a statement to MTV News, her rep shut down the boy bander's account of the events. "What's even more interesting than the false allegations they made is the fact that they have claimed to be picked on by two female pop stars in just a few days," the rep said. "Look out, Lady Gaga &#8212; there are still three days left this week."</P><P>Well, Brit's camp should take note that one of the guys from the Wanted, in the same interview, attempted to do some damage control. Jay McGuiness added, "But, honestly, when we actually met her person to person, she was so down to earth. You can tell she's a total Southern girl, and Nathan [Sykes], when he was a kid, won a singing competition. She was one of the judges or something, and she gave him a kiss. It was one of his first kisses as a kid. So, he got to meet her again and support her."</P><P>That warmer sentiment was one they also shared with MTV News just a week ago, when they sat down with us to premiere their <a href="/news/articles/1683818/the-wanted-chasing-the-sun-video-premiere.jhtml">"Chasing the Sun" video</a>. "She's lovely as well. We haven't really met people who aren't very nice, and Britney was just very, very nice," Sykes said of his teen dream. "She was kind of what you'd expect her to be: very happy and American." And, Parker said even though her bodyguards were kind of scary, Britney had "lovely teeth."</P><P>It wasn't the first time the guys publicly criticized an experience with a female pop star. Although they've since <a href="/news/articles/1684084/the-wanted-christina-aguilera-apology.jhtml">apologized for it</a> (sort of), Tom Parker had said that when they stopped by "The Voice," <a href="/news/articles/1684009/the-wanted-christina-aguilera.jhtml">Christina Aguilera</a> was "<link type="content" id="1684009">a total bitch</a>." "She might not be a bitch in real life, but to us, she was a total bitch. She just sat there and didn't speak to us. With Simon Cowell rumored to be courting a raft of pop princesses for season two, we grade the judges-to-be.

<P>By now, we're all aware that Simon Cowell is reloading. After largely firing blanks on the first season of "The X Factor," he cleared the chamber &#8212; casting off <a href="/news/articles/1678191/paula-abdul-exits-x-factor.jhtml">judges Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger</a> (not to mention host Steve Jones) &#8212; and is now in the process of lining up a collection of high-profile, hollow-point replacements with which to take down the competition.</P><P>Of course, just <i>who</i> Cowell ends up nabbing seems to be a matter of some speculation: His <a href="/news/articles/1682881/britney-spears-x-factor-deal.jhtml">$15 million deal with Britney Spears</a> appeared to be a near certainty, but in the weeks since it was first reported, there's been no movement. And now come rumors that he's courting the likes of <a href="/news/articles/1684289/demi-lovato-x-factor-judge-miley-cyrus.jhtml">Demi Lovato, Miley Cyrus and Avril Lavigne</a> to join the "X Factor" team. Are those names just part of a shrewd ploy from Cowell to get Spears to relent on her reported contract demands and insistences on "various perks"? Or is he truly determined to assemble an all-star lineup for the "Factor"? Really, your guess is as good as ours.</P><P><center><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:632232/cp~vid%3D632232%26uri%3Dmgid%3Auma%3Avideo%3Amtv.com%3A632232" width="460" height="260" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="."></embed></center></P><P>Needless to say, we're not sure <i>who</i> will be joining the "X Factor" panel when the show returns later this year (though we suspect Fox may shed some light on the matter at an upfront event for ad buyers on May 14). So, in the meantime, we're just going to take a look at <i>all</i> of the potential judges, comparing their strengths and weaknesses in an attempt to help Cowell put together a potential Murderer's Row. Because we <i>want</i> the "X Factor" to succeed … lord knows we don't have enough singing competitions on TV at the moment.</P><P>Here's our no-holds-barred scouting report for each of the "X Factor" hopefuls:</P><P><big><b>Britney Spears</b></big><br> <b>Strengths</b>: Spears would instantly become the most famous judge on <i>any</i> U.S. singing competition (sorry Xtina!), therefore automatically raising the profile of a show in desperate need of a good boost. It's the rare combination of both a "career" and a "contemporary" artist, giving the show an answer to "Idol" 's Steven Tyler/ J. Lo combination <i>and</i> the four-headed monster of Aguilera, Adam Levine, Cee Lo and Blake Shelton on "The Voice." As a bonus, she would also fill the "rambling" slot vacated by Abdul, not to mention the "thousand-mile stare" void left when Scherzinger got the boot.</P><P><b>Weaknesses</b>: <link type="content" id="1579025">It's Britney</i>: Live TV may not exactly suit her.</P><P><big><b>Demi Lovato</b></big><br> <b>Strengths</b>: At just 19 years old, Lovato would give Cowell an in-road to the younger, Disney-fied demographic he so desperately craves. Can definitely sing (check her terrific tear-jerker <link type="content" id="1667271">"Skyscraper"</link> for proof), which automatically puts her ahead of something like 90 percent of her singing-competition contemporaries. Has the kind of <a href="/news/articles/1651297/demi-lovato-enters-treatment-center-leaves-tour.jhtml">harrowing backstory</a> that would automatically shut down any hard-luck contestants looking for a few pity points.</P><P><b>Weaknesses</b>: Older viewers might confuse her with Selena Gomez. Could also forget where she is, accidentally reenact that one episode of "Sonny with a Chance" when she's framed for stealing a necklace and subsequently fires a cheese cannon.</P><P><big><b>Miley Cyrus</b></big><BR> <b>Strengths</b>: An established star (with a <a href="/news/articles/1653979/miley-cyrus-caught-smoking-from-bong-on-video.jhtml">slightly checkered past</a>), which would give "X Factor" the kind of constant tabloid attention it failed to generate in season one. Has proven on songs like "The Climb" and her recent cover of Bob Dylan's "You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go" that she's actually got a great voice, which, like Lovato, puts her in rarefied air. May always wear a hoodie during shows. Is constantly making the "sucking a lemon" face.
